The British work five days a week, about fourty hours. Everyone loves the weekend, it’s time to relax, enjoy yourself and forget about work for two days. It means a variety of things like a night out with friends in a pub, watching TV, telephoning, hobbies like painting, pottery, model building, woodwork or do-it-yourself.
One of the most popular British past-times is going to the pub. Pubs are usually open between 11.00 and 23.00, but some are open much longer and remain a popular place to socialize with friends. Pubs are usually very nicely decorated with lot of wood, pictures, old furniture or flowers. Only people of 18 and over are allowed to drink alcohol, mostly beer but also cider, an alcoholic drink made from apples and usually sold in pint or half-pint glasses (a pint is more than 0,5 litre). Most pubs have a dart board, they have darts team which play matches against teams from other pubs, it is a very popular past time.
Relaxing in the home is still more popular. The British watch more television than the people of any other nation with the exception of the US. British TV programmes are generally of high quality and videos are also popular.
Many people equally enjoy seeing films at the cinema.
All types of music and theatre are well supported.
In London and all around UK there are a great number of art galleries and museums.
National sports in UK are football and rugby. Modern lawn tennis was first played in England and one of the most popular sports is horse racing. The traditional summer sport is cricket. The British are also avid walkers and enjoy golf and fishing.
The tradition of afternoon tea, that is taking tea, biscuits, and cakes at about 5 PM, is declining. The British generally eat three meals a day but they may refer to the meal they have in the early evening as “tea”.
